The Dating Habits of Sporting People

Those who know about that sort of thing – brainy coves for the most part – have been telling us for years that women’s football is just about the fastest growing sport in the world and I for one am not minded to disagree with them The good ladies of Norway and China and suchlike places are turning out in there thousands, apparently, to hoof the pill about the field of dreams – and more power to their elbows England too, I am reliably informed, are very much a name to watch
All of which started me thinking During the England (men’s) team’s recent sorties into the international arena, the media spotlight has fallen as much on the WAGS – wives and girlfriends – as on the players themselves Now here’s a funny thing – astonishingly, not one member of the England squad seems to have taken the opportunity to start dating a lady footballer Why should this be?
After all, isn’t a shared interest in the beautiful game just the thing to turn casual dating into a lifelong relationship? Wouldn’t it be just the job for keeping the spark alive after the first hot flush of passion has passed?
You see, while I am quite sure that Posh has many excellent qualities, I find it difficult to picture her and Beck’s having a spirited discussion at the marital breakfast table about the rights and wrongs of the Kris Boyd affair Louise, to take another example, is undoubtedly a fine looking woman, but I cannot quite imagine her and Jamie whiling away a wet weekend in a caravan in the Lake District by digging out an old ‘Shoot’ annual and playing ‘You Are The Ref’ together And can you honestly see Wayne and Colleen meeting up over a couple of pints to thrash out that weekend’s fixed odds coupon? Actually, on reflection, that isn’t all that far-fetched, but you get my general point
The situation is equally puzzling in other sports Sportspeople simply don’t seem to like dating each other Of course there are exceptions – who could forget the groundswell of emotion surrounding Wimbledon in 1974 as sweethearts Jimmy and Chrissie fought through to their respective titles? Mind you, this could just be a tennis thing Competitors on the Women’s Tour date each other all the time, apparently Generally though, it just doesn’t happen Perhaps it is the single-minded determination required to make it in sport that means that relationships between two top performers are highly unlikely I just don’t know
I’ll tell you what I do know, however: on England’s recent cricket tour of the subcontinent Monty Panesar was asked by Indian television who would be his dream date He answered without hesitation – ‘Bruce Lee’ The man too fit to live dating the man too fat to field – now; I’d pay a tidy sum to be at the next table in that restaurant
