The first thing to consider is what type of custody arrangement that you want There is joint, or shared, custody where the child spends time evenly between the two parents This is in contrast to sole custody, where the child spends the majority of time with one parent and visits the other parent Many courts today like to grant joint custody because they feel that is in the child's best interest This decision will affect the rest of your calendar, so talk about it with the child's other parent to come up with the best arrangement you can
After you've decided what type of custody will work for your situation, you need to decide on the basic schedule you want Some common schedules are: parents alternate weeks with the child; one parent has the child during the week, and the other parent has the child on the weekend; one parent has the child during the week, and the other parent has the child for one weeknight and the weekend; other variations including multiple weekday visits with the weekend You can set this up however you want and however it works best for you

After you've figured out the holidays, you want to go through and make any changes to the schedule because of school holidays or vacation A lot of parents change the calendar during summer, Christmas and spring break Decide if there are any changes you want to make You can also make changes for one time or recurring special events--like if visitation changes during soccer season when your children have games Personalize the calendar to you and your children
